A full view of the globular seed pot resting on a stone-like surface. The pot has a narrow, flared neck and a wide, rounded body. The decorative theme features large white-outlined flowers and butterflies. The background is a neutral gray, which makes the warm brown tones and the bright blue turquoise accents of the pottery stand out.
A detailed close-up of the pot’s shoulder. The image highlights the contrast between the crisp, white etched lines of the floral patterns and the organic, wandering black lines from the firing process. One small, round turquoise cabochon is shown perfectly inlaid within the circular head of a butterfly design.
A bird's-eye view looking directly down at the small opening of the seed pot. The symmetrical design is visible, showing four large, stylized white flowers and two butterflies with turquoise inlays arranged around the central neck. The dark, web-like lines of the horsehair firing technique create a marble effect across the entire surface.
A direct view of the bottom of the ceramic pot. The base is a creamy tan color with a dark, circular carbon-fire mark in the center. Etched into this dark center in white are a mark that appears to be a stylized R or 2, followed by the words "ACOMA" and "NM" (New Mexico). Small black "horsehair" carbon lines are visible radiating from the center.
A close-up, side-angle view of a rounded ceramic seed pot against a marbled gray background. A metal ruler is placed behind the vessel, showing the pot's shoulder reaching approximately the 33-centimeter mark. The pot features white sgraffito (etched) floral and leaf designs over a smoky, marbled brown surface. A small, bright blue turquoise stone is inlaid into the design of an etched butterfly.

This distinctive, handcrafted Acoma Pueblo seed pot is a wonderful example of the dramatic Horsehair firing and sgraffito etching techniques, with the added refinement of genuine turquoise inlay.

The pot features a rich, dark brown and tan surface, achieved through the traditional Acoma/Navajo horsehair technique. Strands of horsehair are applied to the clay as it's pulled red-hot from the kiln, instantly burning and leaving behind unique, organic black carbon trails that create a marbleized effect.

Intricate botanical and insect designs, including leaves, stylized flowers, and a large central butterfly, are hand-etched into the dark finish, creating a beautiful white-on-dark contrast that reveals the lighter clay beneath.

Two small pieces of genuine turquoise are carefully inlaid into the body of the butterfly, adding a vibrant touch of blue color and a traditional Southwestern element. *
