Beetle kill is a term used to describe pine trees that have been killed by the Mountain Pine Beetle. The beetles burrow into the tree, lay eggs, and block the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, which kills the tree from the inside out but does not affect the wood's structural integrity. Outbreaks often occur after drought periods that have weakened tree defenses. Beetle kill pine wood can be used as a sustainable building material and was used in the construction of some of the ceilings at the the History Colorado Center in 2012.
