This fun horsehair bison sculpture is hand made by Acoma artist Gary Yellow Corn Louis. A member of the Yellow Corn Clan of Acoma Pueblo, he has been making pottery since 1967 and specializes in horsehair pottery. This whimsical piece is hand etched with traditional designs.
Louis uses horsehair on his pottery to give it the unique textured look you see here. White clay is shaped, then horse hair is laid over it before it is fired. The horse hair burns into the pottery in the heat of the kiln, giving it this fascinating look. After firing, the design is carved into the finish, cutting away the shades of gray and black so that the motif stands out in white relief.
