This spectacular piece of Acoma Pueblo Horsehair Pottery is hand etched with traditional designs. The Acoma potter Gary Yellow Corn Louis used horsehair on his pottery to give it the unique textured look you see here. White clay is shaped, then horse hair is laid over it before it is fired. The horse hair burns into the pottery in the heat of the kiln, giving it this fascinating look. After firing, the design is carved into the finish, cutting away the shades of gray and black, so that the motif stands out in white relief. Louis is a member of the Yellow Corn Clan of Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. He has been making pottery since 1967 and specializes in horsehair pottery.
