2024 Colorado Book Awards Finalist!

The Colorado Book Awards annually celebrates the accomplishments of Colorado’s outstanding authors, editors, illustrators, and photographers. Hilos Culturales was honored as a finalist for history books published in 2024!

"This slim, attractive volume is packed full of vignettes celebrating the Upper Río Grande region that extends from northern New Mexico into southern Colorado, home to a thriving Indo-Hispano culture that has persisted in this majestic setting through many generations and over literally hundreds of years... I can think of no better way for you to gain a feel for this remarkable culture than to pick up Hilos Culturales: Cultural Threads of the San Luis Valley and wend your way through its colorful and entertaining pages."
John McDowell

Review in the Journal of Folklore Research

Founded in 2000, Hilos Culturales shines a spotlight on the traditional arts of the Indio-Hispano communities of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. These cultural arts of the San Luis Valley have roots that span the history of the Americas and beyond, taking on their own local characteristics in every region. Here for the first time are profiles of forty honorees of the Premio Hilos Culturales—the musicians, dancers, and other living treasures who embody and preserve the continued vitality of this cultural tapestry.

In an extensive introduction, Enrique Lamadrid highlights traditions from centuries past to the present day, all of them contributing to the music, dance, storytelling, literary heritage, and folklore of the Upper Río Grande region.
