Horsehair vase by artisan Eric Louis from the Pueblo of Acoma, “Sky City.” He is a 4th generation potter who learned the traditional ways of potting from his mother, Corrine, and his father, Gary. He utilizes all-natural paints and clay gathered from within the Pueblo of Acoma.

This spectacular piece of Acoma Pueblo Horsehair Pottery is hand etched with traditional designs and accented with a turquoise stone. The artist uses horsehair on his pottery to give it the unique textured look you see here. White clay is shaped, then horse hair is laid over it before it is fired. The horse hair burns into the pottery in the heat of the kiln, giving it this fascinating look. After firing, the design is carved into the finish, cutting away the shades of gray and black so that the motif stands out in white relief.
